In Which I Have a Reading Nook and Wish for a Teapot

The last eight months have been good. They were not what I was expecting going into this year. I was moving into a strange city, knowing few others than the girls I was moving in with. I can now say, with absolute certainty, that it was a good decision.

The first four were the toughest; I was working a job I despised going to, hadn't adjusted to life in a new city, and didn't have many close friends. Growing and moving through those times of solitude led to the undertaking of a variety of tv shows: BBC's Doctor Who and Sherlock, Stargate, and 21 Jump Street (the tv show from the 80s, not the movie remake with Channing Tatum that failed to capture the spirit of it's syndicated counterpart) are only a few of the pop cultural realities floating around in my brain as of late.

The latter four months have flown. I have been blessed with some great friends as part of my church family - many of which I have just recently said goodbye to as they head back to their respective cities (and provinces). I began working a new job, and although it is not glamourous, I love it. I have also been busy with the church's College and Careers pre-service worship. It's been rewarding to be involved in an aspect of the church ministry.

Friends out dining post-Sunday morning service to say goodbye to
those headed home for the summer months.

All of that was necessary build up to the project I undertook this weekend upon the relocation of two housemates back to Muskoka Bible Centre for the spring/summer months. Since one happened to live in the same room as me, her habitational shift meant that the [master] bedroom which we were sharing is now solely my own, and that meant cleaning, and reorganizing the room to my own whimsical desire.

Although it is a little empty, I have managed to turn one side of the room into my own personal haven, bringing my vintage gold 1960s church garagesale chair from the main level to create my reading nook.

The "Reading Nook": Complete with pillow, sewing kit and wool for
my creative endeavours.
I am reading several of the books on that shelf, however it mostly consists of my favourite novels. One addition I would like to make for the summer months when I can read by the breeze from that window, is a teapot, kettle and various teas that I can just keep in my bedroom for convenience. Indulging in a good pot of tea while reading a book is becoming a favourite part of my evening.

Vintage teacup and saucer with a homemade
chocolate chip cookie!

And really, with a teacup as cute as that, how can I resist! The trick is really to find a teapot that matches. I am definitely going to be scouting thrift stores for the perfect one.

Back to the bedroom.

Before I started my redecoration, the room had these really awful purple curtains. I am sure they worked for the decor of the room when our landlord lived here, but for the past year I have been slowly planning the demise of those curtains. So, as soon as the housemates were gone, I made a beeline for curtains from one of the other rooms; a deep red to match the red of my bedspread and the red in my granny square crochet blanket. Changing to a red curtain solved the problem of my wood furnature as well. It made the cherry coloured wood warm to see. Instead of walking into a room where everything clashed just a little too profoundly, I think I have successfully transformed it into a comfortable and open space for the summer months left here.

A happy window.
DIY window candles. Twine and tealights.

Finished product. Clean, comfortable. Functional.
I'm very pleased with the result. It literally cost me nothing since all items were stealthly borrowed from other places in the house. There is enough carpet space for yoga in the summer. There is enough shelving space to keep all my reading off the floor. And although I don't plan on investing in artwork for the walls, I feel relaxed and calm in my space. It suits me perfectly. Except for the absence of a teapot and kettle.

Come to think of it, if anyone would like to buy my affections, it can be done so with the Sherlock Holmes novels and a teapot.

Feature Friday: Coming Together

Reintroducing: Miniver Sail.

Simon Fallon. Chrissy Hurn. Sam Kamminga. Cory Hoogsteen.

Featuring: Joe Moran of The Good Hunters.

Miniver Sail is currently working on the official release of their independent debut album. Release date is yet unknown, but I know Simon Fallon fairly well, so I can keep details coming if any of you lovely readers are interested.

Feature Friday will happen at once twice per month, and will seek to feature Canadian talent that isn't quite as recognizable as Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne, or Chad Kreuger. Now, I promise it won't be so Canadian that you'll vomit maple syrup and Degrassi reruns, but I do think there is great merit to recognizing rich Canadian talent - be it creative writing, music, art, or fashion. I would like to start focussing on emerging Canadian culture.

I hope you enjoyed Miniver Sail and Joe Moran's cover of the Beatles. I feel pretty lucky to know these guys (and girl).

Our House (in the middle of the street..)

It goes without saying that upon taking possession of our home (rental) Wednesday, I have been humming Madness's 'Our House' as I go about my daily life. Since I only know the chorus, it has really just been a lot of repetition and annoyed looks from those around me. I can understand, it isn't the most endearing song to have stuck in one's head for a full day --although I'll take it over Justin Bieber's 'Boyfriend' any day.

Usually, there is a lot that goes into house rentals - days of searching, viewing, and applying for tenancy. Moody landlords and real estate agencies, bargaining rent, and all the while still trying to find a place that meets your needs can get pretty tedious. At least, this is what I've heard.

A close friend of mine, who is moving to the city in order to do her Masters degree had been looking for a place since April, and was only approved for tenancy this week. She takes posession September 1.

What I still fail to understand, though, is how it is that we found this house. There is no downside to any part of the tenancy. Allow me to explain:

Back in June my friends and I had decided, a bit on a limb actually, that we wanted to live together in the fall. I had no concrete plans after graduation, but was already planning on moving to the city with my other friends. Liz then decided that she was unhappy at her former University, and applied for a transfer. Becky wasn't returning to her college program, and decided that she needed to work for a year. Candace was looking to transfer her nursing program, however when her admissions was declined, she began looking at other programs. She will now be working as she saves up to fund a new program which she desires to be in.

And so, back in July, the four of us (plus Jenny) made a trip down to see a house. But it was not this house. The house we went to see was located a block away, and when the landlady answered the door, she looked us all up and down and said in an unimpressed and condescending voice, "Wow."

While the house was nice enough, she was wretched. She was rude to us, and basically had her mind made up about the four of us before we even walked in for the showing.

Admittedly, scheduling only one viewing for a day when we drove all the way down from the Muskokas was a bit of a blunder on our part. So we did the only logical thing we could: sit in McDonalds and hope we could find some other house which could do a showing that afternoon. We called a few places, emailed a few people, and had nearly come to the conclusion that we would have to make another trip to the city another day.

So there we sat, hoping that there was something else we could look at while we were in the city. We heard back from one ad, which Becky found while we scoured the internet at McDonalds, and had a few calls which resulted in the need to return to the city. We had agreed to go to Candace's parents' house for dinner that evening, and so we headed off for some food, disappointed that our day hadn't been more productive.

Well, sometime between leaving the McDonalds and finishing dinner, we had arranged to see one more house before heading back to Muskoka. So we drove back to the city where we pulled onto an older street with older houses. We all sniggered when we saw a giant orange and black 'FOR RENT' sign on the front lawn. The five of us all looked at each other and figured we'd just humour it, since we weren't expecting much. The neighbourhood looked a little sktechier than my Redeemer townhouse parkinglot community, and compared to the sub-divisions located in the rich Ancaster suburbs, this older road looked like a ghetto pit. The front door was missing the bottom screen.

Then we walked in.

We opened the first door to find ourselves in a well decorated and renovated mud room, where a little white golden-doodle dog came out and greeted us. Soon after, we were shaking hands with a stylish and funny young woman. She took us around the house, laughing with us and reassuring us that any mad parties we had --and our idea of a mad party is watching Lord of the Rings and drinking wine -- would not affect the flooring because it was new and stain and scratch resistant.

She took us upstairs where we saw a bedroom with a juliet balcony. She took us downstairs where there is a 2 person jacuzzi bath in the bathroom. She took us to the dining room where there was a gorgeous chandelier that she wasn't planning on taking with her when she left. I am fairly sure all of our mouths gaped open as we were walking through. Original hardwood door and window frames and baseboards, a staircase to the attic, and high efficiency washer and dryer pretty much had all of us daydreaming about our year ahead.

Well, less than a week later, this 30-something-urban-developer-engaged-to-a-mechanic-and-moving-to-Toronto landlord sent us the good news: We had been approved for tenancy. The rent per person is phenomenally low, and she left us a whole host of furnishings for the house.

So this week we picked up the keys and sang Madness's 'Our House' as we moved our vintage plates (purchased at the Salvation Army in Huntsville), the dusty Brita water pitcher (been in storage since April) and some bowls (left over from Redeemer days) into our home. We then proceeded to run some utility hook-up errands, and took Liz to get her OSAP processed. On the way home (sounds so right!) we found a Chinese Take-Out place where we ordered food and returned to consume it on the living room floor.

Now despite the fact that the fortune cookie gods know nothing, and practically failed at their fortune jobs, the day was a success. We picked up our keys which the landlord had made for us, individualized with colour and design (cite ladybug key photo earlier up), and thanked her for being so kind to us. She even left us a basket full of welcome goodies --including jam, perfume samples, lip chap, tampons, and body oil from Bath and Body Works, and a little card which went up on the fridge beside the fortune cookies and the Chinese Takeout menu (new favourite!).

The City already felt like home, and the place we are renting has so much possibility and imaginative scope. There is a backyard which is pleading for a little exterior design, a front yard that will get a nice facelift with flowers, and maybe a tire swing (I can dream).

I think, though, that my favourite part of the house is the hidden closet we noticed while doing a walk through again this week. It's painted blue, leads up to the ceiling, has enough space to turn into a reading nook, and stairs which I can start my seedlings on --because there is a huge window letting tons of light into a very very small space.

It's going to be an adventure. It is a good adventure though. I feel peaceful about the move, and I know that God will be faithful and provide me with a job. He has a funny way of being involved in these sorts of things. I just feel blessed. So overwhelmingly blessed, and I'm not sure what I did to deserve such incredible friends, an incredible landlord, and an incredible house. And even if the job isn't incredible, it will be a job that will allow God to work incredible things through.

And though our house may not be a Maxwell House, fueled by Madness on loop (for fear of driving the neighbours and Becky crazy), it will be a home built on the Rock, and that is blessing enough.

Sadie Hawkins Dance

As a jump start to a semester (and to provide a fun celebration of the return of the schoolyear) Amanda's RA group decided to host a Sadie Hawkins Dance. A Sadie Hawkins Dance is one of those old school dances where the girls ask the guys. This particular dance was also Semi-Formal. I've included a few photos.

My good friend Jer was my date!

My lovely dorm! (Left to right: Becca, Emily, Meghan, Me, Meredeth, Christine. Front: Amanda, Jenny)

I wore Erica's dress that she left behind when she went to France. She told me it would come in handy for something! :D

My girls are just beautiful. We started dance preparations (something which Meghan refers to as the 'boyfriend routine') around 3pm. This was the nail polish part of the prep process. We sat sprawled out on the living room floor with bottles of nail polish. Mine are now painted a rather bright blue. In fact, I have a cardigan that is nearly the same colour.

This was followed by the modelling period of the day, where all the girls tried to decided what dresses to wear... all the girls except for Meredeth, who was still quite determined that she was not going to come. That changed at about 6:30pm. But I'll get there.

4pm marked makeup time. Emily did all of our makeup. Our eyes looked incredible! She received a really amazing set of eyeshadows and blush and toner. She had every colour you can imagine, and she did an awesome job! I wish we had taken photos of everyone's eyes up close, because she matched colours to dresses and skin tone.. awesome.

At the end of the make-up time, we finally coaxed Meredeth into coming. Meghan straightened Becca's hair, my hair and Emily's hair. I did my own hair, twisting it into this cute knot thing. I did Mer's hair at about 7:15pm. After everyone had decided what shoes to wear (Christine came out with two different shoes on, trying to decide which ones she liked better), Becca decided she was going to wear one of my dresses, Mer also decided she was going to wear one of my dresses, and I decided I was going to wear Erica's dress.

At 7:45 (Dance started at 8) the boys showed up. Here are some snapshots!

Everyone had a great time. Meredeth was the last one to come home. She enjoyed it more than she thought she would.

Today was spent nursing sore feet and watching Big Bang Theory in the afternoon.

The Lame Shall Walk

God really does make the lame able to walk again.

Amanda's roommate of last year has been in France. Her mother has had MS for 25 years. Recently, she has undergone surgery in Costa Rica, and has, since, slowly been able to regain use of her muscles. Her story can be found here.

Praise God.

Life in Dorm 17

The following are a collection of photographs from the last 3 weeks. (I did promise they would come!)

Frog Olympics. Black Team came in 2nd Place!

Niagara Falls. Six of Eight sitting on the really big chair.

Beth and I thought we were pretty cool, being all Royal Mountie and Moose-like.

The next two photographs were done by Maryanne Farrow. She is a Redeemer Alumnist and good friends with Amanda. Paired with fun outfits and sunshine, they turned out quite lovely.

These girls are wonderful, beautiful; created in the image of God.

Tweedledee and Tweedledum

Do you have those friends whom you can be a part from for a year or two and pick up exactly where you left off?

I discovered this week, that I have a few of those. Jon and Cliff were two of my dear friends in High School, and I had the priviledge of seeing them both this week. It reminded me of the good old days in the cafeteria, chugging back Coca Cola, eating breakfast, playing Pokemon... These two guys are great. Cliff is a bit of a joke. He's hard to take serious, and his sense of humour is often filled with profanity and crudeness, but he is so endearing. It took me a while, but I grew to love him. He was one of those guys that knew where you could get anything, (even though he had no interest in it), poked fun at himself, and laughed a lot. I found out today that he is going to be a policeman. Which made me laugh a little, because his persona was always the kid making fun of the cops. Think...Michael Kelso from 'That 70s Show'. That's Clifford Swift (his reasoning for becoming a police officer was actually that with a name like Swift, he had to do something with a title.) My advice? Stay off the streets. They'll give him and gun and tazor when he graduates. (just kidding...)

Jon, on the other hand, is a quiet, Christian guy who is really the opposite of Cliff. He doesn't know what he wants to do with life, and that's fine. I think he's just ready to give it all up to God and follow. Jon's been a really good influence in my life tha past few years, and I am thankful for his friendship. He's okay to let Cliff steal the show. Someday Jon will be up on a stage rocking out with his guitar.

I love them both, and it was so good to see them today. 3am and that's what I had to post.

On another note, I am going to Hamilton this weekend, so I won't be blogging again until Monday. I hope that you all have wonderful weekends. God Bless.

It's a Wonderful Life

Old friends, memories, Anne of Green Gables.

That's my weekend. How wonderful it was.

It's kind of fun to reminisce about the old days of high school newspapers, swamp monsters and charicatures. It is also fun to drink exceeding amounts of coffee and spend an evening laughing with a friend.

Kristi's Dating Advice.

My room mate decided she had the best dating advice today. It's the 'no-surprises' method. Basically, she figures, she's not going to shave her legs. Because that way, when the time comes around that she actually needs to have her legs shaved, you know, for a banquet, or for the summer, or church (all those skirts in the summer) the boyfriend would actually appreciate it.

She decided that in order for him to not be surprised, but appreciated, she would be straight up disgusting when it comes to common hygiene (like shaving your legs...and I'm sure that armpits would fall under the category as well). I feel her method is good.

Except for one consideration.

First you have to catch the guy.

So, ladies. Here's what I offer.

I think, that in order to get the guy, be yourself. Shower every morning, shave your legs all the time. Get your hair done, and take care of yourself. This way, you'll catch one! However, once you've got him hooked with your dazzling wits, your beautiful face, and your amazing personality, let the hair grow. And ladies, I mean, let it grow. Don't shave it, don't pluck it, don't even wax it. And then, no surprises.

I feel like this could turn into a good episode of HIMYM!

New Friends

This is a blog post dedicated to all the new people who have entered my life in the past week.
New friends are great!

And I'm thrilled to know you.
