I realized this week that I have been working my way through several books since [probably] January, and I decided it was about time I should finish them.
Also, for those avid followers of mine, namely Suggernuggets, who have wondered in silence where the Marineland Commercial Count went, do not worry for it remains. In fact, my surprise is simply that I actually managed some Marineland commercials this summer - all the way up in the Muskokas.

The Beginning and the Looming Sleep Cloud
Remember how I complained that I was bored?
Remember when I said that I was looking forward to my brain having something useful to think about?
Well, school started.
Last week was RA/HA training. This is one of the most intense weeks of the year. It is when all the RAs and HAs get fed with mountains of information on how to save lives, invest in the dorm spiritually, use a fire extinguisher, and deal with any up and coming problems that may arise during the year. Its all fine and dandy, until you are so overwhelmed by seeing all your friends that you have missed so much over the course of the summer, that it cuts so far into your hours of sleep that you suffer near exhaustion by the end of the week.
And then you move the girls in and realize that you have become old and incapable of keeping up with 18 year olds and their fast paced, witty, conversations.
And then you start with the classes, and the homework starts to pile on. And then you realize that there is no way to have sleep come back to you, even though you wish for it so dearly, and it hangs above you like a looming storm cloud that only wants to lightening but never rain.
Okay, its a bit of an exaggeration.
But seriously, I have done over 40 pages of reading this morning, and I have another 300 pages to do before tonight is over.
The semester begins.
OH! The final Marineland commerical count was 95.

Yesterdays and Tomorrows
This summer, I worked the worst job I may ever have.
Housekeeping at Redeemer is no picnic. I have experienced one of the darkest sides of the school, and it is a side which I never hope to see the likes of again. If it has been nothing else, this summer has been a learning experience. It has been a summer of firsts.
First time paying rent.
First time paying utilties.
First time (in about 6 years) going to the Canada Day fireworks.
First time working a Sunday.
First time legitimately living on my own.
First time being angry at Redeemer.
First time letting boys sleep in the basement.
First time sending a package through the post office.
First time doing MY OWN groceries.
First time hating a job.
Ranting about Redeemer's Campus Services and the awful experiences I have had with the administrative side of the school could be worth a blog post - it could also be worth a Crown article. This entry will, however, be more of a reflection on my summer; a summer I didn't do a great job of documenting.
I have learned a lot this summer. I have learned that I do not like working behind the scenes. I like to be in charge, and I tend to be vocal when I don't agree with my supervisor's actions (ie. we work hard, and the supervisor watches shows on the computer...last time I checked, being a manager doesn't give you the trip to work less, but harder...) I have come to measure my own sanity in the number of dorms I can clean, or the days I can go without doing dishes...
I have also been preparing for one of the most incredible experiences of my life - to be a Residence Advisor for six first year girls. I have been praying for them, and preparing myself for the responsibility, and getting excited about everything that is to come. I have stressed about a disagreement between myself and my Co-RA, and also been completely thrilled when her and I have agreed on basically all the big stuff. I am learning to step back and not be in complete control...and to take one day at a time.
This summer has been busy. It has been full of fun times and frustrating ones. It involved movie nights and pizza, girls nights with Kait, a trip to Webster's Falls, a hypothetical trip to the Toronto Zoo, many hours vacuuming, scrubbing showers, making beds. It has been a summer of weddings, professions of faith, baptisms, and Friends.
One of my favourite things to do this summer was to walk to church on Sunday morning in the sunshine, with my shoes off, down the sidewalk. I loved coming into the church which was lit by the sun, and letting the entire week fall at the door. I loved worshipping, listening, learning. God has been good.
This summer has brought some goodbyes, some hellos, and some see you laters. I said goodbye to one of my best friends at Redeemer as he travels to Halifax to do his Masters at Dalhousie. I said hello to all the girls I worked with this summer. And the see you laters, I hope, are for all the people whom have become such a vital part of my life this summer, but will probably never see me once essay season starts...
The upcoming year is going to be a challenging one. It will stretch every part of me. The girls will teach me, and I will teach them. My classes will challenge me, and the Crown will knock off any remaining energy I have. I will be sleep deprived, I will be crazy, and I will be hanging on by my faith in God.
So, yesterdays lead in to tomorrows.
A change of seasons.

A little change in Marineland
Well, readers, it is that time again. Yesterday marked the first Marineland commercial. However, this summer, there is going to be a little bit of a twist in the matter.
Since I lack a television, my Marineland Commercial Count has been restricted - to radio. Now, surprisingly, this has promise. Living in the GTA, they are played on all the radio stations. My housemate heard at least 3 radio commercials yesterday. I feel as though this will be a good way to keep the tradition going... after all, they still play the song.
And so,

ps. Housemate and I move out of the Blue Castle today. Dad comes to help us this evening. Drink up to a mouse-less house.

Thoughts on Getting Keys
It's been a long couple of days. Here I sit, in the Crown office, wondering how I am ever going to figure out the depths of Adobe InDesign, which has to be about the most confusing program ever imaginable.
Let me tell you the story of how I came to be sitting in this office.
Once upon a time, there was a school named Redeemer University College and it needed a new layout editor for the school year. I applied, I got in, I thought to myself 'Yay!'
When I returned to the school in the fall to take on my wonderful job, I found that I needed a key. I thought to myself, well, if one needs keys, they go to the security office and that is exactly what I did. The security office informed me that I must go to the main office and pick the key up there, but, not to go anymore that day, as it was only open until 4:30. So, I went the following day to the main office, and the main office told me they didn't deal with the keys and to go back to security. This appeared to be a problem. I thought for a moment, and spoke to the Senate president who suggested I speak to Dean Schat. 'Great Idea!' I said, and proceeded to find Dean Schat. Dean Schat was not at the school. The following day (count it, third day back at Redeemer), I went to talk to Dean Schat, and he informed me I needed to get a form from the Main office which he would sign and I would get my key. This was incredibly irritating. Back I trode to the main office, demanded a form, recieved the form, and then went back to Dean Schat. Thankfully, he signed the form, and the main office (who. misleadingly had the keys the whole time) gave me my key to the Crown office.
Now I sit here, pondering layouts. I can't decide really how I want things to look, and I have various spreads and archived papers all around me. I think that I am going to go back to my Macintosh and set up a nice layout there.
Until then, I shall just be grateful that I have the keys which I desire and need.
On another note, Marineland commercial count ended two days ago. The final count was 99.
To replace the Marineland commercial count, I have decided I am going to own one of my fellow campus 'advisors' at Uno. The score shall be tallied.

Open Closet Doors. Curly Hair. Nuns.
Nothing new on the Marineland commerical counting. Though, I know I will reach a hundred, which seems like a small number to me. I'm used to seeing many more. Maybe I'm just not watching the news enough.
Closet door is open. I should shut that. The boogey man might come out and get me. Personally, I'm kind of hoping for Mike or Sulley from Monsters Inc. At least they come with a comedy act.
Joel VV visited today. Curly blonde hair, and lots of it. We watched a really slow movie. 'Doubt' with Meryl Streep. I give it a pass.

Oxymoron #18- Dry Wetnaps
My lovely parents have made their way out to a sweet vacation spot to celebrate their 21st wedding anniversary (*party streamers and noisemakers cue*), leaving my sister and I to fend for ourselves all week. Of course, both of us are self sufficient, so we have had no problems. Tonight we decided to put our mediocre culinary skills to rest and took ourselves out to Crabby Joes, along with our cousins. Meal was delicious, dessert was excellent. Steven provided astounding comic relief. It was a great evening. The main source of amusement was when we openned a wetnap and unfolded it- only to find it was dry. Many jokes were made, someone made the suggestion that Steven should ask the waiter for a wet one, and then of course, we all realized rather quickly the connotations involved with that request. Cheap bill, thanks to 39 cent wings they had going on. All in all, a good deal.
Tonight I was passing time by flipping back and forth between Leno and The Hour (with George Strompo-something), and George had this really interesting economist on. He was the former head guy from CIBC and he wrote a book. His ideas were interesting, suggesting that three digit oil prices might just send globalization on a reverse course. He said that eventually, fueling everything to bring around the world for the demands- such as fresh fruit we have in the grocery stores- will just not be cost effective any more. Our world will become smaller, because people will not be able to afford gas prices to commute 40 miles to and from work. Supply and demand is going to need to be met within regions. Remember the old family farm? Suddenly back in business in the local markets. It makes sense. But what does that do to our manufacturing (or lack there of) businesses within our country? This economist suggested that triple digit oil prices will bring back industry. Yep, I was confused too. But it made sense. For the money that China, let's say, is using to transport the iron to it's factories to make the steel, and then ship it out again, will just not be cost effective. They aren't suffering for the hour's wages it takes to make the steel, but the transportation costs. Suddenly, manufacturing factories are reinstituted in places nearer to home.
One of the notions that struck me, was his insistence that our diets would change. We wouldn't have access to all the fresh produce year round (worst case scenerio), and so we would have to grow things appropriate to our climate. Carrots, potatoes, beans, corn, strawberries, raspberries- and start freezing veggies and making jam again. Local farm will come back to serve their communities, and backyard chicken farms (all the rage in Europe) will become a part of every home.
My decision about all this? Marry a farm boy with land and horses.

A Catchy Little Tune...
I couldn't believe that Sherilyn had never seen a MarineLand commercial So I have put together some of my favourites for her to listen to and watch. I started counting these darn commercials years ago after I got sick of hearing the song. They did a good job on these, because kids love to watch them, and adults groan and sigh everytime they are heard. It's an Ontario anthem of sorts...much like the "Good things groo-ow in Ontario!" song they've also written.
I think I have made my point.

Time
This is what my life has come to.
I am thrilled to announce that Strathroy's BK Lounge has the second best Drive Thru time in all of Ontario. That was almost the highlight of my day.
The most amusing part of my 8 hour shift happened around 3 oclock when the teenagers all got out of school. The kid driving his little black honda civic has the thing souped up, and the engine turbo charged and the wheels had really nice rims. Until he drove away in cloud of smoke, I noticed that one side of the car had the nice rims, and the other two wheels were rusting and rimless. I couldn't help but smile.

And the Counting Begins...
For those of you who have known me for a long time, know that every summer I faithfully count the Marineland Commercials for Niagara Falls, ON. This year shall be no exception. At the end of each week I will keep you all informed on the latest numbers and tally. I know, I'm weird, but it is so much more fun to go through life accepting the idiosyncrasies we all have rather than fighting them. For me, it is a matter of embrassing the most annoyingly endearing commercial on T.V.
*sings*
There's a place I know in Ontario, where the sea lions kiss so the story goes. It's amazing shows and friendship coves...everyone loves Marineland. You'll be spinning, diving and soaring high up on a coaster ride, you'll fly into the sky, now you know what to say when you leave here today...everyone LOOOOVES Marineland.
Gag me.
The count begins.

The End of Summer.
Today is September 4th. I am awaiting my second class. So here I sit on my front porch enjoying the view of the hill, trees and school building. It's really very beautiful here. Kind of secluded, but wonderful. I'm making a lot of great new friends! I guess that means that summer is over.
School is fun. I really do love it. It's going to be a little strange to go back to class after having 8 months of no homework, no teachers, no textbooks. (Don't even get me started on how expensive textbooks are. I feel saddened, knowing I have spent a good chunk of my money on books I cannot write in (no, actually, will not. I have a thing against writing in books. I don't know why. One of my many idiosyncrazies?). I had to buy sticky tack because I lost the stuff I bought originally. But the good news is, my doormmate Brianne and I found a job! Redeemer CRC in Meadowlands is looking for help with the coffee-break program! So We get to babysit children from 9-11 on wednesday mornings for 10$ a morning! I'm kinda excited about that!
And now, for the count you have waited for all summer. How many MarineLand commercials were there? 108.5! Good year. Sad, that we spend so much money on advertising. However, it does give me something to do all summer. If you are interested in starting your own Marineland commercial count, I suggest watching the evening news. AChannel, CTS, CityTV, Global. These stations show it regularily. You also may luck out with the CBC, but this year, it was all about the Olympics. The moral? Yes, I watch too much TV. :)

As If
For what it's worth, I'm tired of Marineland commercials. I'm tired of the new song. I'm kind of angry at them for making a new song. I have to learn all the new words now. Like what is that?
For what else its worth, this blog entry just sucks.
I'm tired of this world. All that's on the news anymore is this stupid presidential election (which I suppose isn't that stupid, we're all just tired of hearing about it. I mean, really, whoever wins next has got a lot to clean up, and the USA could really use a world facelift). I'm tired of hearing about how energy inefficient our world is, and how gasoline costs so much. I'm tired of hearing about smart cars, and smaller laundry detergents and green this and green that. I mean, really, can we change that much? Our society will always be wasteful. If we run out of oil (which I have no doubt we will) we'll find some other non-renewable energy source to waste until we have nothing left. And then, we will fight each other, and kill each other.
My outlook on the world is generally bleak. My outlook on humanity probably could be better. But I love people. I think they are funny. I think the human brain is a curious thing. And I think passion and reason are the conflicts that we as people need to worry about. Its when passion controls reason, and reason controls passion that the real war begins. The brain against the heart.
My brain wants to learn the words to the new Marineland commercial, my heart wants the commercials to die. I'd say that's conflict.
