How does your garden grow?

Until recently, I had no ambition to try and grow anything except for my clothing collection. Not flowers, not vegetables, not herbs. It didn't make a whole lot of sense since my Dad used to have a rather impressive vegetable garden inhabiting the back half of our yard. He grew rows and rows and rows and rows...and rows.. of green and yellow beans, which would then be picked and frozen to eat during the winter months. He would have cherry and normal sized tomatoes, peppers, and once I believe he tried to grow strawberries which ended up as a snack for the birds.

He also planted sunflowers.
And gladiolas.

So, gardening is in my family. I am going to just come out and make the assumption that, until this year, I had neither the ambition, nor the means to make a decent garden. It is, after all, a little difficult to grow tomatoes when you are working at a camp or living in a dorm room.

It surprised me, more than anyone, that I suddenly have this overwhelming urge to turn my world into a green and growing paradise. So, because of my unfortunate lack of funds, I have jumped on the kitchen-scrap-garden bandwagon and taken to trying my own experiments in mason jars and small planters on the jane-eyre window sill of our dining room.

First up is the green onions and romaine lettuce plants.

Green onion is easy. You save the bottoms, stick them in a jar or cup, immerse in water, and wait. Within a week they will have have regrown to near their original height (provided you've found a sunny place) and then you can keep chopping off what you need when you need it. I've harvested from these probably 5 times already, and they just keep growing.

The romaine lettuce I started today. I need to keep the bottom immersed in water until they begin to regrow roots, and then they will be transplanted into a pot.

Well, specifically this pot.

The celery currently inhabiting the one side was in the mason jar which now hold the lettuce. It finally started developing roots, and I transplanted it into this smallish black window planter this morning. I used a clotheshanger to make the sign (and you will notice that clothespins were also used to make the signs for the lettuce and green onions).

Now. Side story.
I tried growing peppers from seeds in my peppers. Turns out that doesn't work. I started the seedlings in an egg carton in April (like Pinterest told me) in a mix of potting mix and garden soil. I tried everything to get them to grow. I watered them every day, I put them in sunlight, I danced for them, and I even played them a healthy dose of Jack Johnson in the hopes that their little seedlings spirits would be filled with springtime joy - images of birds and bees and ladybugs and sitting by the lakeside soaking up the sunshine and listening to Bob Marley...

Turns out, my pepper seeds had no imagination and no capability to grow. I gave up and surrendered them to decompost in the backyard.

Adding some ribbon and twine to the outsides of the mason jars (and just ribbon to the pot) has given these a fun inside touch.

This week I plan on fixing this:

Cite our horrendous backyard.

What you can't see is the sprouting grass which is starting to come up after this week's rainstorms. We are supposed to be getting more rain tonight and tomorrow, so hopefully that will prompt the stubborn grass to grow in our poor, dusty backyard.

I also put bulbs in the fridge this week that I plan on pulling out mid-July and trying to grow again.

'Tis the season, I suppose.

Nativity Scene Fail

Thanks to my friend Reubin for pointing this out to me:

Can you figure out what is wrong with this picture?

Photo Editing

I did a little bit of photo-editing after a photo shoot with some friends. Used Picnik.com. Useful site, I might add.

We are moved into Olivia Place, which means that I am sitting on a couch writing this entry, not at a school computer, or at my friend's house. The place was a mess. I don't think that the guys knew how to clean. Housemate and I were going to bake a pie, in celebration of our moving from Blue Castle into something less sketchy, however, when we turned the oven on, there was so much crap caked to the bottom of the oven, that it actually lit on fire.

There were flames and smoke.

If I had been faster, I would have taken a picture, or a video, or something to commemorate the occassion.

Needless to say, Housemate and I decided that it would be better to just clean the thing.

So, we opened some coolers, looked at our messy house, and decided to tackle it in the morning.

See, originally, we were supposed to work the day after we moved in, but God knew we would need the day to clean and get organized. So, after working on Saturday, we both had Wednesday off. It took Housemate 5 hours to clean the oven alone (not the stove, not the little drawer thing underneath)...and that was using some super oven remover from work...the stuff we used to clean the ovens in the dorms. It took me 2 hours to clean the fridge (excluding freezer), and another couple hours to wash down gross walls, and kitchen floors and tables.

Needless to say, its been fun.

Northern Highlights

A Trip up to the Muskokas to see my sister this week was definitely a good time.

I miss her a lot, and it was really nice to see her smiling and giggling face, and all her freckles.

I had a chance to take some fun photos on my mom's friend's dock. I loved it there, and could easily have stayed up in the Muskokas longer. Canada has such gorgeous northern country.

I liked the picture to the left. It made me laugh as we drove through small town Listowel. You know you've passed through a small town when...

The Weekend in Retrospect

What a wonderful weekend it was. It seems like forever ago that I woke up at 5am on Saturday to work for 6am. The shift was short and left much time to embrace all the wonderful sunshine that happened this weekend. How I wish I had soaked up so much more of it!

I had taken some photos of the blooming garden. Gorgeous flowers, and I must say that the garden looks much better this year than previously. There are still some Corabells I would like to snap some photos of.My photo skills are still something to be worked on, though I enjoy the scenery.

My sister and I took a trip to the mall on Saturday evening and definitely made the most of the sales going on. Fun summer shorts and a dress and aviator sunglasses later, we found ourselves back home rather pooped and quite pleased with the purchases.

Sunday was wonderful also. Church in the morning brought me back to my childhood. My mom and I decided we wanted to check out the intern the other CRC church in town. The intern happens to be a young lady who was a small group leader at a program I attended a few years back at Calvin Theological Seminary. It was wonderful to see an old friend, and to chat for about an hour following the service. The afternoon was mother-daughter time. Mom and I took a trip to the USA to return some jeans she had gotten. We got a little sidetracked at the Christian Bookstore and I ended up purchasing a new Bible (my old one has seen better days, and the devotions in it are aimed at 12 year olds. I am definitely grown out of those..) The Bible excited me...all leather bound and red lettering where Jesus speaks. The whole afternoon was sunny and bright and going over the bridge in Sarnia was absolutely beautiful. The water was a rich teal colour that reminded me of the ocean off Cancun.

Today was spent uptown (or downtown...I'm not sure which) with my friend Stephanie. She had recently returned from France on an exchange program through Redeemer, and I was quite pleased to see her. We went out for lunch at a small cafe in town, and then spent the afternoon at the park, swinging, walking, soaking in the sun, and taking some goofy photos (which I hope to put up here soon).

I hope, dear readers, that God blessed you with wonderful weekends as well. I hope that you were able to soak up some sunshine and live joyfully.

Signs of Spring

In the garden, the flowers have begun to bloom, the deep dull browns of winter are passing by. All's quiet in the gardens, on the streets, with a quiet serenity to the sunshine today.

The neighbors have an old bicycle that was parked out on their driveway. I liked the look of it against the fresh grass. Seemed old and antique in the newness of spring.

I liked the juxtaposition of the new flowers against last year's oak leaves in the garden.

And now, for a little photo editting. My attempt at emphasizing the bright daffodils that have decided to make an appearance.

No pictures?

I've become recently frustrated with Blogger. It won't let me load pictures onto my blog. I don't know why, and I don't figure that I'll find out either. If anyone has any ideas as to how to make them stick, let me know. I'm more than willing to take your advice!

I just want my pictures back!!
